Courageous Conversations

Our church world changes at the end of February, one way or another.  We can prepare or we can let it just happen to us and be surprised.  The Courageous Conversations planned for January and February will give us a chance to prepare, so that we can enter Lent and try to discern for ourselves who we are as individuals and as Calvary United Methodist Church.

We are planning four sessions, modeled after the Quadrilateral that John Wesley articulated for us as a guide in making decisions.  Each session will be offered at three times during the week, so everyone who wishes to can attend.  On a Sunday afternoon we will have soup after church and meet from 12:30 to 2pm, then on Monday evening from 6:30 to 8pm, and then again on Wednesday morning from 10 to 11:30am.  Each session will be informative for 20 minutes or so, with time for questions and discussion afterward.  The following week will be unscheduled so we can all reflect and digest.

Week of January 13:  Scripture.  What does the Bible say about human sexuality in all its myriad forms?  What was the ancient understanding of human sexuality and the context for the passages about homosexuality?  What specifically does Jesus say, or his life, death and resurrection lead us to believe? What is the authority of Scripture in our lives today?

Week of January 27:  Tradition.  How has the church understood or controlled human sexuality over the centuries?  Specifically, how did that pesky sentence come to be in the Book of Discipline, and what is the process that is going to determine the fate of the United Methodist Church?  How does that process affect us here?

Week of February 10:  Reason.  What is the modern understanding of gender roles and human sexuality?  How does it differ from that of the ancient world?  Specifically, what are the guiding, foundational values of Calvary and the United Methodist denomination?  How does that affect our individual and community use of the quadrilateral?

Week of February 24:  Experience.  How have our personal and cultural attitudes changed in the last few years?  What has caused the change?  What are our personal stories?  Can we disagree and still be together?

Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, March 6 and will be the perfect time for reflection and discernment, individually and as a community.  Watch for specific Lenten activities that will help us figure out who we are and who we want to become.  What voices will we listen to?
